CARAWAY STREET
Frequently Asked Questions

questionmark

WHAT RESOURCES ARE NEEDED TO BEGIN CARAWAY STREET?

  • Good leadership - a lay supervisor with vision to oversee the program.
  • Committed Workers - who love children and like a non-traditional approach to teaching.
  • A room large enough for the scenery (at least 20 x 40). If your facilities are smaller, set adaptations are available.
  • Finances to purchase the program (payment plans are available upon request).

WHAT ARE THE PERSONNEL NEEDS OF CARAWAY STREET?

  • A team teaching approach using two casts of six people each. One cast performs 'odd' numbered weeks, the other cast performs "even" numbered weeks. In this way, each cast member can be in the morning service or "off duty" two weeks out of every four. An individual worker participates 26 out of 52 weeks, making this commitment less likely to cause "burn out".

  • Each cast contains: 2 actor/puppeteers, 2 actress/puppeteers, 1 director (organizes out front scenes - could be an actor), 1 stage manager (directs and organizes action backstage), block parents (adults to sit with kids for keeping order, counseling, and/or discipline. We recommend two per 25-30 kids. These helpers are in addition to the basic six each week. They are oftentimes scheduled as you would nursery workers.)

HOW MUCH PREPARATION TIME IS NEEDED FOR EACH CAST MEMBER?

AT HOME: One to two hours every OTHER week - memorizing acting lines and where to move on stage.

REHEARSAL: Two to three hours every OTHER week.

WHAT SIZE ROOM IS NEEDED TO OPERATE THE PROGRAM?

The ideal, using the entire 30 foot wide set, would be a room 30 feet by 40 feet and 8 1/2 feet high, set aside for only CARAWAY STREET use (seating about 50 children).

Most churches use CARAWAY STREET in a large meeting room, fellowship hall, or gym. Again, using all of the scenery, a minimum of 20x40x8 would be necessary.

A church or school can choose to not use the set in its entirety. This will save space and finances, if necessary, for the smaller ministry.

We are glad to make recommendations on adapting the program to your specific needs.

IS THE SCENERY (SET) PORTABLE?

The ideal would be to have your own room for CARAWAY STREET where the set can be left up week to week.  However, all pieces are joined with bolts and wing nuts. No section is wider than five feet and can be turned on end to go through an average sized door for storage elsewhere. For a year, our home church had to take down the entire set every week. Four of us had it down in 20 minutes. The set is also on casters and can be rolled to the sidelines or against the wall of your room. This allows for multiple uses of the church facilities or out-reach opportunitie

WHAT ABOUT TRAINING?

Once the program has been purchased, there are three portions to the training:

    • Video Workshop: We provide you with three videos for a two to three week period to be viewed prior to your scheduled workshop. Fill-in-the-blank workbooks are also furnished that correspond with the videos.
    • Written notes: Each cast or crew member has notes to study on their own area of responsibility. A review will be provided at the live training.
    • Live Workshop: This takes place on a Friday night, all day Saturday, and culminates with your first performance Sunday morning.

Workshop Content: Answering any questions; review of discipline and leading a child to Christ; practice and critique of puppetry and acting, rehearsal of script 1, blocking of script 2, leadership information - successful programs have had strong LAY leadership that realizes the program's potential and is committed to it!

AS A STAFF PERSON, WILL SUPERVISING CARAWAY STREET TAKE LOTS OF TIME?

No! Lay leadership will take this responsibility to free you to take care of your other duties.

HOW ADAPTABLE IS THE PROGRAM TO OUR OWN CHURCH'S NEEDS? FOR EXAMPLE, TEACHING ABOUT BAPTISM, COMMUNION, MISSIONS, STEWARDSHIP, ETC.?

You have the freedom to be creative and add skits of your own at the end of any script. Also, some churches have built a smaller set or have started with only one cast until they begin to grow.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE AVERAGE AGE OF CARAWAY STREET WORKERS?

20-45; however, we have used members from 16-60! (This is a great way to involve your youth!)

WILL THIS PROGRAM HELP OUR CHURCH GROW NUMERICALLY?

Many churches with a limited amount of advertising have doubled their children's attendance by the third week. One pastor told us that he had to start printing more bulletins for the morning service and the only thing he could attribute this to was CARAWAY STREET! The quickest way to a parent's heart is through their children. Young parents are looking for a church with something dynamic for their kids!

CAN WE JUST BUY THE SCRIPTS?

No, the program is only sold as a package.

DO WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE TRAINING?

Yes; in fact, most supervisors, after a workshop, say they would not want to try starting CARAWAY STREET without the training. Even if your people are trained in puppetry already, this is only a small part of our workshop. One professional puppeteer told us we are sharing an entirely new approach to teaching!

CAN WE USE THE LARGE MOUTH PUPPETS WE ALREADY OWN?

Yes. Our patterns are included with the blueprints and can be used for replacement puppets and new characters.

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD WE ALLOW FROM DATE OF PURCHASE TO THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM?

On the average, about two months for set construction, sewing of puppets, recruitment of workers, and video/note training.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE SUCCESS RATE OF CARAWAY STREET

It depends on how you define “success”

Over the years, thousands of kids have given their life to Christ. We have heard numerous reports of kids making applications to their life and parents seeing changes in their attitudes and behavior!

The average church finishes the 3-year cycle of scripts. Many churches have gone on to use the program for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rotation of the 156 scripts; some churches are entering their 22nd, 23rd, or 24th year of the program.

One amazing development is how many adults, ministering in CARAWAY STREET, have reported deep changes in their walk with the Lord! This is a result we hadn’t expected!!!

CAN WE HAVE GRADES OTHER THAN FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD JOIN US IN CARAWAY STREET?

Yes. Many churches include Kindergarten through Fourth.  However, there are some difficulties with including younger and older children. For example, there are certain learning skills that preschool children have not acquired. About the only thing they can learn from the program is by rote memory. Also, their short attention span will not allow them to sit quietly through 1 1/4 hours of programming. Children over age ten are not challenged by the material because it is geared to the level of the primary child. Master's Mansion, a programs for Grades 4-6, is now being developed. Some churches have found 5th and 6th graders enjoy CARAWAY STREET for about a year if they are used to help lead Breaktime and Gametime activities. They will be more patient if they know their stay is indefinite!
